A Sweet Success Story

Bob Zwolenik's family has owned Dairy Queens since his father purchased the Pearl Road store in 1970. Throughout the past thirty-three years the store has been enlarged and remodeled several times and in 1993 Bob's father retired and passed the reins to Bob.

Bob was raised around the Dairy Queen business from the age of six and you can still hear the excitement and enthusiasm in his voice whenever you ask him questions about the world's most famous ice cream store. He'll tell you how the first Dairy Queen was opened in 1940, by 1941 they had grown to include ten stores, and today they are one of the largest fast food systems in the world with over 5,900 restaurants throughout the world. When you ask "what's new?" his eyes will sparkle as he describes their new Pecan Praline Parfait, a rich, delectable dessert combining creamy smooth Dairy Queen vanilla soft serve, coated with rich New Orleans-style brown sugar praline sauce and sprinkled with lightly roasted pecan pieces. His description of the new Crispy Chicken Caesar Salad with a blend of mixed greens, shredded Parmesan Cheese, seasoned croutons, and topped with chopped, crispy or grilled chicken strips and creamy Caesar dressing will make your mouth water and the just thought of their new Wild Buffalo Chicken Strip Basket with chicken strips coated in a hot and spicy buffalo sauce and served with fries, celery, and a cool, creamy blue cheese dipping sauce will have you packing the kids in the car and heading for Dairy Queen. The undisputed biggest seller is their Blizzard, available in over twenty flavors including this year's new addition of the Strawberry Cheesequake Blizzard featuring strawberry topping and cheesecake pieces blended with Dairy Queen's creamy soft serve ice cream. Bob's Dairy Queen serves a full line of lunch and dinner foods including soups, chili, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and kid's meals that are some of the best fast food in the country. Last, but certainly not least, no one in their right mind could write an article about Dairy Queen without mentioning their fantastic line of ice cream cakes. We're talking about birthday cakes, graduation cakes, Father's Day cakes, and all occasions cakes that are so popular that Bob has a full time decorator on staff every day. Four sizes of cakes, serving from five to twenty people each, are made fresh at the store daily and come is a wide variety of styles. If you call twenty-four hours in advance, they'll even custom-make a cake to your wishes. Apparently I'm not the only one who's enchanted by these delicious cakes as Bob tells us that throughout the summer months it's common for them to make over 1,500 of them per month!

Dairy Queen is the home of mighty good food and with Bob's description of the new menu items this year, I can't believe you're not in the car already. When you get there, don't forget to tell Bob that The Advocate sent you!
